Well School Orienteering – 12 June 2011 Weather: 60°F, rain with intensity varying from downpours to sprinkles. It has been about five years since I last used this map to hold an event. I’m still amazed at the intricacy and areas of beautiful open woods of this map. The start venue needed to be changed as the Sargent Center is now owned by the Nature’s Classroom. The new management has stated that they require a $45 entrance fee for each person orienteering. There is not much chance for this place as a future orienteering start venue. Personally I think their ‘for profit’ business model is flawed and the best of luck to them. The savior was the Well School which is located on the south-east corner of the map. Many thanks to the Well School for allowing the orienteering to take place! The map needed some extensive revisions as the Well School has built ‘The Village’ behind the school. This little community is totally off the grid with a communal heating system and extensive farming to supplement its food supplies. Really cool atmosphere with its own movie theater and bar in one of the buildings. So the great thing about technology is all the additional data you can collect and analyze. That is all well and good if the technology all works. Our printer for downloading gave up the ghost two days before the event and I was not able to troubleshoot it. Thus no splits for the runners until you download at the next event – so don’t clear until your SI unit until you download. We really need to improve the e-punching as I think it adds great appeal for the kids especially. A computer based system that downloads would be a better system and we should look into that. I was a bit worried, that with all the rain that I would be the only one out on such a day. We had about 15 hardy souls that braved the elements.
