Ahern State Park, June 29, 2003 It was a disappointingly small turnout for an absolutely wonderful day. Temperatures were in the low 80’s, with much lower humidity than we’d experienced earlier in the week. The mosquitoes were out in full force in the woods, but at the registration / start / finish area a light breeze off the lake and thousands of dragonflies kept them at bay. The complex terrain of Ahern kept the per kilometer times down, but everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Most people also took full advantage of the beach 25 feet from the finish to cool off after their run. For the advanced courses, runners copied all control locations and codes off time, then received a clue sheet showing the controls in order at the start of each loop. This seemed to work much better than having them copy new control locations at the start of the 2d and 3d loops while dripping onto their map. Maps were printed on an Epson inkjet printer with waterproof ink, which held up very well under some intense sweating. My thanks to Doug Gosling for volunteering for registration, Tim Arsenault for running start and finish and control pickup, and Steve Tarry and Ben Arsenault for control pickup.
